Sooooo today was a pretty decent day overall. We had a marketing presentation this morning, and it was REALLY helpful. I don’t think I’ve taken that many notes in a long time.
I made the somewhat shocking, but also “duh, obviously” kind of realization today that a lot of what we’re learning on the business side of this program is pretty helpful for businesses in general. And pretty easily translatable to other fields of work (:
We had an App Slam this afternoon, which was actually really great – we just ran into presentation problems.
I feel like there are always… “personnel” problems with group/team work? We all get along decently well, which is helpful and we’re all on the same page as far as what our brand is and what we want it to represent. And today, for this workshop, we came up with a good fitness app idea (good by our opinion) that our presenter botched completely.
The idea: an app that syncs to your phone calendar (or whichever you prefer, iCal, Android’s calendar, Google Calendar, or manually entered entries) and, based on your schedule, prompts you to work out when you have an open slot of time – complete wth workout suggestions based on the following:
- the time frame you have available
- your location (indoors, at work, outdoors, etc)
- the type of workout you want (cardio, strength, flexibility)
- The difficulty level (easy, moderate, hard)
Ideally, we’d have some sponsored content and some user-generated content or maybe even have partnerships with Instagram/YouTube fitness/workout gurus. But that was just one idea for expansion and we didn’t even need to present that.
Our presenter has a tendency to overexplain/go off on slight tangents in what seems like an attempt to be more clear/relatable in her explanations. I don’t know what the actual word is, but pretentious comes to mind, despite that not being quite right. In any event, her explanation, both of our brand and the app was excessively long, inaccurate, and she inserted “voice optimization” features to the app when it hadn’t once come up on our group conversation. That alone, regardless of presentation “technique” was frustrating.
Idk. It’s difficult for me to gauge how open I am to having her present (alone) again in the future. Today’s incident made everyone in our group uneasy about it and I think her strengths are elsewhere. Finding that balance is difficult in group work.
ON THE OTHER HAND. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH BETTER I FEEL ABOUT MY ROOM BEING PUT TOGETHER NOW (: CLEAN SPACES MAKE ME FEEL INFINITELY BETTER AS A PERSON.
I have computer workshops in the morning/afternoon, and group meetings Sunday, so my weekend’s a little busy. BUT, I’ll have InDesign and Photoshop skills by this time tomorrow, and most of Sunday to sleep/explore!! 😀
I hope you all have a fabulous weekend! (:
